New Working Paper Released on the Democratic Quality of Local Elections in Mozambique

The second CPGD working paper is an assessment of the democratic quality of local elections in Mozambique since the founding local election in 1998. It assesses (i) political participation including voter turnout and whether opposition parties contested or boycotted elections; (ii) political competition of local elections including levels of competitiveness such as the share of the winners vote and whether the election produced alternation of power and (iii) legitimacy of local elections including the extent to which losers accept defeat, whether the election process was peaceful and democratic regime survival.
