Working Paper: Born Frees’ Attitudes towards Democracy in Mozambique

CPGD's latest publication focuses on Mozambique's Born Frees - Mozambicans born and raised since the country's first democratic multiparty elections in 1994 - and analyses their attitudes towards democracy. In searching for whether being born and growing up in a democratic context matters, this study tests the generational effect on attitudes toward democracy, controlling for other factors, using Afrobarometer survey data from 2015.

New Working Paper: Youth Political Engagement and their Social Condition in Mozambique

A recent study in Mozambique on youth political engagement shows that youth affiliated in political party organizations as well as in civic associations are more likely to participate in political processes; and, as a result, receive a positive payoff from that. Whilst the attitudes of these youth are known, the attitudes of ordinary youth (those not affiliated with youth party organisations and civic associations) are not known. This working paper investigates the extent to which ordinary young adults engage in political processes compared to older adults.

Working Paper: Electricity Provision and Elections in Mozambique

By employing nightlight electricity and election data this working paper tests and examines the effect of government provision of electricity to the public in relation to the 1999, 2004 and 2014 elections in Mozambique. Controlling for other aspects, it found that the provision of electricity appears to have no effect either on election competition or voter turnout, as the level of electricity within the country is very shallow and electricity tends to be equally distributed across electoral districts.

New Briefing Paper: Solving the Concerns of Mozambican Youth

Our latest policy brief "Solving the concerns of Mozambican Youth," is based on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Research on Governance and Development (CPGD) for the National Democratic Institute (NDI) on youth attitudes toward political and economic development and their expectations for socio-economic development in Mozambique. The study, conducted in December 2015, was a qualitative public opinion study using focus group discussions methodology.

Call for V-Dem Country Coordinators

CPGD is working with the V-Dem Institute (https://v-dem.net), an independent research institute which collects data on democracy 350+ indicators for all countries in the world. V-Dem hosts the biggest dataset on democracy and in 2016 has received the Lijphart/Przeworski/Verba Dataset Award!

V-Dem are now searching for young prominent scholars who are interested in joining the global V-Dem Team as a ’Country Coordinator’ for: Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique.
